Meet Lydia: Life Enrichment Companion

What makes a good Life Enrichment Companion at Origin at Spring Creek? If you talk to Lydia, you’ll learn it’s about having a love for people’s stories. As a Life Enrichment Companion, Lydia has the opportunity to get to know Origin residents and learn from their rich and diverse histories, including life lessons and personal reflections. The opportunity is fulfilling for Lydia, and her hope is that more people consider taking the time to listen and learn from the older adults in their lives.

What does the day in your work life look like?

The day in the life of a companion is always different. Here at Origin, we have fourteen residents that the Companion team work with so each hour spent with a resident is tailored to that person’s needs, hobbies and abilities. Each day we can get up to many things from going on a beautiful walk or bus ride to learning tai chi.

When did you first become interested in working with seniors?

I had an interest after taking care of my Great-Nan before she passed away and it was so rewarding. I was able to listen to her stories of real-life historical events, and put a smile on her face; just caring for her brought me so much joy. 

What are some of your favourite parts of your job?

The residents are one of my most favourite parts of my job – being able to get to know residents on a more personal level. I get to know their family members by name and meet their pets and hear so many fascinating stories. Another favourite is the Life Enrichment team. The ladies I work with are truly amazing. From all the work they do with the residents and the ideas they come up to being great genuine people who you can rely on not just in a workplace setting.

How long have you lived in Canmore?

I have lived in Canmore for 12 years.

As a local, what activities or places would you recommend to visitors or newcomers?

You definitely cannot beat the hiking trails &  leisure walks that we have here in Canmore. They are usually accessible year-round which is great. 

What is one thing you wish the world could know about the work you do as a Life Enrichment Companion?

 I wish people and the world could know about the lives these people have lived. You learn so much, from patience, life lessons, recipes, music and experiences that can help people better their lives.
